An exponent is a number small and raised that represents the "shortcut method" to showing how many times a number is multiplied by itself. Whenever you have a negative base and the exponent is evenyour answer will always be positive! Whenever you have a negative base and the exponent is oddyour answer will always be negative!

Now is the tricky problem! What happens when you have a negative base, but it's not in parenthesis? This means that you take the opposite of your final answer. When you have a zero as an exponent, your answer will always be 1. The only exception is 0 0 is undefined. This was just a quick review of the meaning of exponents before we get into the laws of exponents and monomials!

I hope this gives you better foundation for beginning this unit! Good luck! The next lesson you should check out is the laws of exponents! We have a new platform with updated videos and worksheets. Click here to login to our Learn Worlds platform. Algebra Class.

As long as the exponent is a positive whole number, you can think of it as telling you how many times you should multiply the base by itself.

Many values that you calculate from exponents will be quite large. Negative exponents are treated a bit differently. Here are a few examples of how this works. As you can see, it is simply about following the formula when dealing with negative exponents. After this, you can simply calculate the value using the rules above. In algebra and more advanced math, it is very common to see an exponent of one-half or some other fraction. This is one way to represent terms involving roots, or radical terms.

By definition if n is nonzero :. Working with these types of terms radical terms is a more advanced topic and will be the subject of a different article, but it is important that you be able to rewrite such terms using the definition as below.

As you study terms involving exponents, you will find that you need to combine rules quite often. For example, the rule above can be combined with the rule for negative exponents to simplify even more complex expressions.

Finding the value of terms with exponents on scientific or graphing calculators is quite easy. On the TI83 or TI You can also always use the carat symbol on google just type it into google! As you continue studying exponents, you will also want to review the order of operations. This lesson will show you how to handle expressions that have exponents, multiplication, and other operations all together. We are always posting new free lessons and adding more study guides, calculator guides, and problem packs.

Before you learn how to work with fractional exponents and use them to express powers and roots together, let's do a quick vocabulary review:. It is important that you are familiar with identifying the root index and radicand before moving forward. Note: If a radical symbol does not include a root index value, the number 2 is implied square root. The radicand is 64 and the root index is 3. Now that you are able to identify the root index and the radicand, you are ready to understand fraction exponents.

A fractional exponent is another way of expressing powers and roots together.

You will now learn how to express a value either in radical form or as a value with a fractional exponent. Example: Express the square root of 49 as a fractional exponent. Here is the rule that you can use to work with fractional exponents from now on:. If you need a fast and easy way to convert between radical expressions and expressions with fractional exponents, then you can take advantage of the many free online fractional exponents calculators that are available.
